This week we practised the humming breath technique. Bhramari Pranayama is named after the black bumble bee in India and the humming helps with sense withdrawal and concentration. It involves sitting and humming in one long continuous tone whilst breathing deeply. To feel the vibrations in the lower parts of the body, direct lower tone hums to lower chakras. To feel vibrations in the upper parts of the body, direct higher tone hums to higher chakras. This technique activates the vagus nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system helping to decrease heart rate for calming effects as well as stimulate saliva production and smooth muscles for better digestion. Other benefits include boosted immunity and reduced blood pressure.
